Millions of American seniors suffer from dementia and Alzheimer's disease every year. There is currently no cure for Alzheimer's disease but there are things that can be done to slow the progression or minimize the symptoms. Recently, poetry has been added to the list of arts that have powerful effects on seniors with Alzheimer's or dementia.
Seniors can benefit from reading or listening to their favorite poets or they can be exposed to new poetry. Either way, the lyrical composition of the poetry often has a calming and stress-reducing effect. Well-known poetry may have the additional benefit of being linked to long-term memories or emotions. Listening to or reading familiar poems can reintroduce those memories that would otherwise have been lost. Interestingly, prose does not seem to have this same effect.
Writing poetry also has many creative and therapeutic benefits. Seniors who write poetry are tapping into the creative centers of their brain and can access memories and emotions during their creative process. Writing poetry also helps improve a senior's sense of accomplishment, feelings of well-being, and success. This leads to stress reduction and increased levels of overall happiness.
Seniors who require help reading or writing poetry can get assistance from at home health care providers. This assistance does not seem to impact the positive effects of poetry.
Comfort Keepers at home health care providers are known for their homemaking and personal care supports, but they specialize in dementia and Alzheimer's care. This means that caregivers have received specialized training to work with seniors who require memory care assistance, have cognitive challenges, and need extra help and support with daily living tasks and personal care.
